Chiba prefectural authorities said the death toll from the heavy rain and flooding that hit the area last week has risen from 11 to 13. More than 2,300 homes in the prefecture have also been flooded due to the rain-induced deluge.
The severe rain and flooding began on August 14, paralyzing transportation and causing widespread inundation in many residential areas. Rescue and recovery efforts are still being carried out urgently in the affected areas.
Local authorities are focusing on supporting residents' evacuation while assessing the extent of damage to infrastructure and homes. Officials also warned of ongoing risks of landslides and flash floods in some areas due to water-saturated soil.
