At least five people were killed and 41 others remain missing after a fire broke out on a passenger ferry off Madura Island, Indonesia, authorities said.
The ferry, named Mutiara Sentosa 2, caught fire on Sunday (July 19) while traveling from Surabaya, East Java province, to Makassar, South Sulawesi province. Madura Island lies off the northeastern coast of Java.
Dramatic video footage showed thick black smoke rising from the ferry while passengers in life jackets gathered on deck, awaiting rescue.
The ferry was carrying 232 passengers and 39 crew members, according to records. By Sunday afternoon, 225 people had been rescued.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities working to locate those still missing. The initial cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, frequently experiences maritime accidents, partly due to lax enforcement of safety regulations and unpredictable weather.
