Matchday two of the 2026-27 Champions League brings a slate of marquee fixtures, with Manchester City hosting PSG days after Premier League financial sanctions and Manchester United visiting an in-form Atletico Madrid. Defending champions PSG lead the standings after a strong opening round.
The UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2026-27 enters its second matchday this week, with all 36 teams across Europe in action as clubs return to the most prestigious competition in club football.
After the opening round of fixtures, two-time defending champions Paris Saint-Germain top the standings with three points, followed by Bayern Munich (six-time winners) and Barcelona (five-time winners), who also won their opening matches.
The league-phase format is now in its third year, running from September through January 2027, followed by the knockout rounds and a final in early June.
What is the Champions League?
It is the annual competition for Europe's leading clubs. This season marks the third with 36 teams in the main phase, up from 32 under the previous format.
The 2026-27 format
Since the 2024-25 season, the 36 clubs have been placed in a single league table under the Swiss system — familiar from chess. Previously, teams played six group-stage matches, facing each opponent home and away; now each club plays eight matches, each against a different opponent.
Knockout format
At the end of the league phase, the top eight teams advance directly to the knockout stage, while teams ranked 9th to 24th must play a two-legged playoff. Teams finishing 25th or lower are eliminated. The knockout stage comprises the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
Schedule
The league phase runs on the following dates: matchday 1 (Sept 8-10), matchday 2 (Oct 13-14), matchday 3 (Oct 20-21), matchday 4 (Nov 3-4), matchday 5 (Nov 24-25), matchday 6 (Dec 8-9), matchday 7 (Jan 19-20, 2027) and matchday 8 (Jan 27, 2027).
Knockout rounds (all in 2027):
- Playoffs: Feb 16, 17, 23 and 24
- Round of 16: March 9, 10, 16 and 17
- Quarterfinals: April 6, 7, 13 and 14
- Semifinals: April 27, 28 and May 4, 5
- Final: June 5

Next week's highlights are PSG vs Barcelona and Liverpool vs Villarreal (Oct 20, 19:00 GMT), Como vs Manchester United (Oct 21, 16:45 GMT), and Bayern Munich vs Arsenal and Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig (Oct 21, 19:00 GMT).
Talking points
City's home meeting with PSG is the headline fixture of this matchday, marking the Manchester club's first Champions League outing since an independent panel found them in breach of more than 100 Premier League financial rules.
Meanwhile, under-pressure Manchester United travel to Madrid to face an in-form Atletico, hoping to secure their third win of the season. In another subplot, manager Jose Mourinho will face his former club AS Roma when Real Madrid visit the Italian capital.
Players to watch
PSG's Ferran Torres, who scored a hat-trick in the opening match, jointly leads the scoring charts with Ermedin Demirovic of Stuttgart. Also worth watching are Erling Haaland (Man City), Michael Olise (Bayern Munich) and Ousmane Dembele (PSG), who each scored twice on matchday one.
