Serie A club Napoli announced that midfielder Scott McTominay will undergo a surgical procedure to treat a heart arrhythmia. As a result, the 29-year-old Scottish player will be unavailable until after the season's first international break, meaning he won't return until October.
In a statement on Tuesday, Napoli said: "After the detection of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo a PFA procedure (pulsed field ablation) in the coming days." PFA is a minimally invasive technique used to treat certain heart rhythm disorders.
McTominay was one of Serie A's standout players, playing a key role in helping Napoli clinch the league title in 2025. He also featured for Scotland at this year's World Cup and was among the nominees for the most recent Ballon d'Or.
The player was substituted in the second half during Napoli's 1-2 defeat to Como on Sunday. McTominay came through Manchester United's youth academy, which he joined under manager Alex Ferguson, and has earned 73 caps for Scotland, scoring 15 goals. He moved to Napoli in 2024 after seven seasons with United's first team.
