Serie A club Cagliari has confirmed that French forward Yael Trepy is in critical condition in hospital after being rescued from a near-drowning incident. The incident occurred over the weekend and quickly drew attention from Italian media.
According to an official statement from Cagliari, Trepy is “currently receiving intensive care at a hospital in Sassari.” The club said it is “in close contact with the medical team and the player’s family.” In the statement, the team also stressed: “The club asks everyone to respect privacy and will provide further updates as soon as possible.”
Italian media reported that Trepy was rescued on Sunday after swallowing a significant amount of water at a pool in Porto Cervo, in the northern part of Sardinia. Doctors placed the 20-year-old in an induced coma to manage his condition.
Trepy, a forward who scored one goal in eight Serie A appearances last season, joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Paris-based club Union Sportive Creteil. His most recent match was on Friday, when he played 54 minutes in a 1-0 win over Arezzo in the Coppa Italia.
