Brazilian welterweight Carlos Prates overwhelmed Jack Della Maddalena to secure a victory in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Perth, Australia, on Saturday.
Prates knocked the Australian to the canvas with a calf kick late in the second round, then dropped him three more times in the third round — with a knee, a kick to the head, and a leg kick — before the referee stepped in to stop the fight.
After the win, Prates challenged welterweight champion Islam Makhachev or Ian Machado Garry, depending on the outcome of their yet-to-be-confirmed title bout.
“I can punch, I can knee, I can kick … so I’m better, and right now I feel like I’m the No. 1 contender,” Prates said after the fight. “I’m very excited to see the fight between Makhachev and Ian, and after that I’ll fight the winner.”
Prates, 32, earned his third straight win, improving to 24-7 with 19 wins by knockout. Della Maddalena, 29, suffered his second consecutive loss, dropping to 18-4 with 12 wins by knockout.
