Toronto police said an officer was killed while investigating a March shooting at the US consulate.
Police Chief Myron Demkiw said Thursday that officer Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was shot while executing a search warrant related to the case and later died in hospital.
Demkiw explained the warrant was “related to a number of shootings, including the shooting at the US consulate” and that several warrants were executed that morning.
One suspect in Thursday's shooting is in custody at a hospital, while police continue to search for a second suspect, identified as Zara Jabbi, 19. Police consider him armed and dangerous.
“I urge you to turn yourself in,” Demkiw said at a news conference.
Police are still investigating the March attack on the US consulate, when two suspects got out of a vehicle and fired multiple shots at the diplomatic mission in the early morning. The building was unoccupied and sustained only exterior damage. No one was killed or injured in that incident, which federal police said would be investigated to determine if it was a “terrorist” attack.
Details remain unclear, but the US consulate has been the site of tense protests and counter-protests over the US-Israel war against Iran.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said she has known the family of the slain officer for 20 years and offered condolences. “The death of Officer Marco Pinizzotto is heartbreaking news for our city,” Chow wrote on social media. “There are no words to ease the pain for his family, loved ones, and colleagues. This grief reverberates across the city.”
