Derbyshire Police in England are investigating an 'assault allegation' linked to an incident that saw England cricketer Brydon Carse handcuffed outside a nightclub over the weekend.
Carse was ruled out of the second Test against Pakistan, scheduled to take place at Lord's on Thursday, after the cricket board launched an investigation into the matter. The Durham fast bowler was detained outside a bar in Derby on Saturday evening but was released after agreeing to leave the scene.
In an updated statement released on Wednesday evening, Derbyshire Police said: 'We are investigating allegations of assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.'
It remains unclear whether Carse was involved in the alleged assault. The England and Wales Cricket Board has made no public comment on the latest development.
Earlier, in its first statement after footage of Carse being held by police on the street circulated, the force said: 'A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday evening. However, the man was released shortly afterwards after agreeing to leave the area.'
Former England captain Ben Stokes and bowler Potts both appeared in the video, which was recorded after Durham's victory over Derbyshire in the County Championship, but there is no indication they were involved in the incident.
Current captain Joe Root expressed his frustration over the latest in a growing list of alcohol-related incidents within the England team. Root, who abolished the midnight curfew, said: 'To be frank, I am genuinely frustrated. I spoke to Brydon, and when I first found out, my first concern was him as a person. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say he is very upset, very remorseful, and understands his actions.'
Root added: 'It's not about the single incident; it's about us continuously making silly mistakes off the field, which distracts from what we are doing on it.'
