Japan's Defense Ministry is considering submitting a budget request of approximately ¥8.9 trillion (about $60 billion) for fiscal 2027, marking the highest defense spending level in the country's history.
Under the plan, the funds would be used to enhance defense capabilities, including the development of advanced weapons systems, expansion of counterstrike capabilities, and modernization of the Self-Defense Forces. This move comes as Japan steps up its security policy to address growing challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier, the Japanese government committed to a significant increase in defense spending for the 2023–2027 period, aiming to reach expenditure equivalent to 2% of GDP in line with NATO standards. The projected amount for fiscal 2027 continues the upward trend seen in recent years, reflecting Tokyo's determination to strengthen national defense.
Officials at the Defense Ministry said budget allocation would prioritize key areas such as missile defense, cyber warfare, space, and expanded deterrence capabilities. The budget proposal is expected to be submitted to the Finance Ministry in the near future before being incorporated into the national budget draft for parliamentary review.
