Portugal’s World Cup 2026 campaign started with a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their Group K opener. Despite being heavy favorites, Roberto Martinez’s side could only manage a point against a team making its first appearance at the tournament since 1974 (when it played as Zaire).
Portugal began brightly and took the lead in the sixth minute. Pedro Neto set up Joao Neves, who rose to head the ball into the net. However, the African side quickly regained their composure and equalized in first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa got free to head home from close range, scoring DR Congo’s first goal in World Cup history.
Cristiano Ronaldo, 41 years old, was largely anonymous throughout the match. Although he had a few chances from combinations with Francisco Conceicao (who replaced Bernardo Silva at halftime), his finishing was off. Bernardo Silva, who had just joined Real Madrid on a free transfer on match day, also had an ineffective first half and was substituted at the break.
DR Congo not only defended resolutely but also created problems for Portugal’s goal. Veteran striker Cedric Bakambu came close to making it 2-1 when his shot hit the post. Joao Cancelo had a spectacular bicycle kick ruled out for offside.
Notably, Portugal’s players wore black armbands in memory of their late teammate Diogo Jota (who died in a car accident last year), presented by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. Former star Pepe, watching from the stands, was visibly unhappy with the team’s performance.
The draw leaves Portugal with just one point from their opening match, while DR Congo earned their first point at world football’s biggest stage amid the backdrop of an Ebola outbreak at home.
