About 100 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside a New York synagogue for the second time in six months to protest an Israeli real estate event selling land in the occupied West Bank. The demonstration, organized by Pal-Awda NY, saw clashes between opposing groups as well as with police.
About 100 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside a synagogue in New York on Tuesday evening, the second such protest in six months, to denounce the Great Israeli Real Estate Event, which markets properties in the occupied West Bank.
Counter-protesters also appeared at the scene, leading to scuffles between the two opposing groups. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators also clashed with police after attempting to push past security barriers to get closer to the synagogue.
New York City Council member Zohran Mamdani condemned the real estate event. A spokesperson for Mamdani told The Intercept that some of the properties being advertised are 'illegal under international law and intimately tied to the ongoing displacement of Palestinians.'
The protest was organized by the group Pal-Awda NY, which staged a similar demonstration outside the same synagogue during an Israeli real estate event last November.
Since then, the New York City Council has passed legislation restricting protests near places of worship. Under the new rules, police must publicly disclose plans to set up buffer zones during demonstrations outside houses of worship.
The New York event, officially called The Great Israeli Real Estate Event, is held in the U.S. and Canada to help foreign buyers purchase property in Israel and relocate there.
Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law.
