Shady al-Areer, a 38-year-old Palestinian man, has been separated from his family since the war in Gaza erupted. He longs to see his wife, children, and relatives again, but the path home is blocked by conflict.
According to his account, Shady had left Gaza before October 7, 2023. After that date, he became stranded in Israel and was forced to find a way to cross illegally into the West Bank to seek temporary shelter.
Shady said that since the war broke out, he has not been able to communicate regularly with his wife and children, who are still in Gaza. Every phone call is fraught with anxiety as he hears bombs and gunfire near their home. He said: “I just want to hold my wife and children one more time, but the war has stolen that from me.”
Currently, Shady is living a precarious life in the West Bank, working odd jobs and waiting for a chance to reunite. His story reflects the difficult situation of many other Palestinians who have been torn from their loved ones by the prolonged conflict.
He hopes that one day peace will return so his family can be together again. But for now, the separation continues, and the longing grows stronger with time.
