Florida Primary: Progressive Upset and Trump's Influence Shape Key Races

Florida's primary on Tuesday delivered surprises and expected results, highlighting tensions within both major U.S. parties ahead of November's midterms. Progressive Angie Nixon defeated a well-funded rival, while Trump-backed Byron Donalds won the GOP gubernatorial nomination.
Florida's primary on Tuesday unfolded with a mix of surprises and anticipated outcomes, underscoring internal strains in both major U.S. parties as they gear up for the November midterm elections. This was the first election held under the state's newly redrawn congressional map, which observers say was designed to favor Republicans and could leave Democrats holding a very small number of the state's 28 House seats.
The results sent a shockwave through the Democratic Party, as progressive state legislator Angie Nixon defeated former national security official Alexander Vindman, who had far more financial backing, in the Senate primary race. Meanwhile, Republican Representative Byron Donalds, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, clinched the gubernatorial nomination, raising the possibility he could become Florida's first Black governor.
Progressive Victory Surprises
Nixon's win over Vindman is the latest sign that progressive candidates are breaking through against better-funded establishment rivals. Nixon, a state lawmaker and former labor organizer, raised less than $1 million, while Vindman out-fundraised her by more than 16 times. Vindman gained national fame for his testimony during Trump's first impeachment trial in 2019, while Nixon built her profile in Florida politics and progressive circles, earning backing from prominent progressives including Representative Ilhan Omar.
Nixon will face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in a special election in November to fill the remaining two years of the term left by former Senator Marco Rubio, who resigned to become U.S. Secretary of State.
However, not every progressive candidate prevailed. In another race, labor organizer Oliver Larkin lost to incumbent Democrat Jared Moskowitz in a new, Republican-leaning district.
In a relief for the Democratic establishment, longtime Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz easily won a tightly contested race, defeating Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and three other Black candidates in a majority-Black district. Cherfilus-McCormick had resigned earlier this year amid a federal indictment and threats of censure from the House Ethics Committee, but she sought to reclaim her seat.
Trump-Backed Donalds Wins
Republicans saw a clearer result in the gubernatorial race, as Representative Byron Donalds, endorsed by Trump, won the nomination to succeed term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis. Donalds will face Democratic candidate David Jolly, a former Republican who later became an independent before joining the Democrats. If elected, Donalds would become Florida's first Black governor.
He is also part of the largest cohort of Black gubernatorial candidates nationwide this year. Currently, there is only one Black governor in the U.S., Wes Moore, a Democrat from Maryland, who is running for re-election in November.
Donalds' victory reinforces Trump's influence over Republican primary voters, but Florida's broader rightward shift remains a more significant factor in the gubernatorial race.
Representative Cory Mills Loses, GOP Seat Flips
Republican Representative Cory Mills lost his primary to former television anchor Ryan Elijah, ending Mills' bid for a third term. Mills faced ethics investigations and misconduct allegations, making his re-election increasingly difficult. Trump initially endorsed Mills in February but did not include him in his endorsement list on Monday.
Far-Right Randy Fine Holds Seat
Incumbent Representative Randy Fine, a Trump ally, fended off several challengers to win the GOP nomination for Florida's 6th Congressional District. Since his election last year, Fine has become a symbol of anti-Islam and anti-Palestinian rhetoric in mainstream U.S. politics. The staunchly pro-Israel lawmaker has suggested killing all Muslims, praised the starvation of children in Gaza, and called for Israel to use nuclear weapons against Palestinian territory. He faced a field of opponents, most notably social media personality Daniel Bilzerian, who has also faced allegations of anti-Semitism.
