Clashes erupted after a football match in the town of Tarhuna, about 80 kilometers south of the capital Tripoli, leaving several people injured. A government building in the capital was also set on fire.
The match between Tripoli's Al-Ittihad SCSC and Misrata's Asswehly SC took place on Thursday. According to Libyan state news agency LANA, the game was played behind closed doors and was halted just before the final whistle after Al-Ittihad players protested a penalty decision they believed should have been awarded in their favor.
This led to brawls between supporters and security forces outside the stadium, LANA reported.
Libya's Presidential Council said protesters attacked the headquarters of the Council of Ministers in Tripoli with 'acts of vandalism and arson.' LANA reported that the fire was quickly brought under control.
The council has called for an investigation into 'the regrettable events,' stressing that feelings of injustice should be addressed through legal means, not violence.
