Japan’s Minister of Economic Security Sanae Takaichi issued a strong warning about the threat from North Korea and again raised the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by Pyongyang during a speech at the Group of Seven summit in the UK.
In her address on June 8, Takaichi stressed that North Korea’s nuclear and missile activities are increasing, posing a serious threat to regional and international security. She called on the international community, especially G7 nations, to maintain maximum pressure on Pyongyang to force it to abandon its weapons of mass destruction programs.
Takaichi also raised the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s, describing it as a grave, unresolved human rights problem. She urged G7 countries to support efforts to secure the return of surviving victims and clarify the fate of others.
The G7 summit takes place amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang conducting a series of missile launches in recent months. Japan views regional security as a top priority and is actively seeking support from G7 partners.
