England and Ghana meet at Gillette Stadium in a decisive Group L clash at the 2026 World Cup. The winner advances to the round of 32, with both sides starting the group with victories.
The Group L clash between England and Ghana at the 2026 World Cup will take place at 20:00 GMT (03:00 Wednesday Vietnam time) at Gillette Stadium in Houston, USA. The victorious team will officially book their ticket to the round of 32.
England impressed in their opener, defeating Croatia 4-2 with goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford. However, defensive frailties have raised questions about the Three Lions' backline.
Ghana, meanwhile, displayed a disciplined and more balanced performance in a 1-0 win over Panama. Carlos Queiroz's side are eager to reach the knockout stage for the first time in 16 years.
England midfielder Declan Rice said: 'The second-half performance against Croatia is the benchmark we need to aim for. We believe if we do that from the first minute, we can beat any opponent in the world.' England are chasing their first World Cup title in 60 years.
On the Ghana side, coach Carlos Queiroz appeared unfazed by the strong opposition: 'This is the easiest type of match, because when you are about to face England, France or Germany, you don't need to say anything to the players. They are fully motivated. Everyone is focused and wants to perform well. We know they have three lions on their shirt, but we come from Ghana with 33 million lions... to fight for this game.'
According to Opta's supercomputer predictions, England have a 78.8% chance of victory, while Ghana's win probability stands at just 7.9%, with a 13.3% chance of a draw. England rank fourth in the World Cup 2026 title prediction list with a 10.39% chance, behind Argentina, France, and Spain.
On the team news front, England boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed no injuries, with winger Bukayo Saka fully recovered from an Achilles heel issue. Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey missed the opening match due to visa problems but is now in the USA and ready to play. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi faces a late fitness test due to injury.
Probable lineups:
England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; James, Konsa, Stones, O'Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.
Ghana (4-3-3): Asare; Senaya, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Yirenkyi, Partey, Sulemana; Nuamah, Ayew, Semenyo.
The two sides have met only once before, a 1-1 friendly draw in March 2011. England have never lost to an African team at the World Cup in their last eight matches, but Ghana represent a new challenge in a competitive fixture.
Group L standings: England and Ghana both have 3 points, ahead of Croatia and Panama (0 points each). The top two from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the round of 32.
