Over 6,000 Foreigner Complaints About Taxi Overcharging in Seoul in Five Years

SEOUL — Complaints from foreigners about being charged above the regulated fare by taxis in Seoul have topped 6,000 cases over the past five years, yet only about 3 percent of them resulted in remedial measures, a South Korean lawmaker said Sunday.

According to the lawmaker, the complaints centered on foreign visitors being charged taxi fares above the regulated rate during their stays in the capital. Despite the large volume of complaints, the share that received remedial action was very low, at only about 3 percent.

The figures were released as protections for the rights of tourists and foreign residents in Seoul remain a subject of public concern. The data provided by the lawmaker did not detail the handling process for individual complaints or the timeframes for resolving them.
