All four Humboldt penguins housed at a zoo in northeastern Japan, which died successively last month, have been confirmed to have died from avian malaria, according to investigation results released Friday.
The investigation showed that the cause of death for all four penguins was avian malaria, a disease caused by parasites, typically transmitted through mosquito bites. Zoo officials conducted examinations and confirmed that all the deceased birds tested positive for the disease.
The zoo, located in northeastern Japan, continues to monitor the situation and has stepped up mosquito control measures to protect the remaining animals. Officials also appealed for understanding and cooperation from visitors as the zoo implements necessary safety measures.
