The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) reported that a climbing team of 10 members, led by renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, is believed to be missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak (8,047m), located in the Karakoram range in northern Pakistan.
In a statement issued late on September 5 (local time), the ACP stated that the climbing team led by Purja has been unreachable since the incident. All team members have lost contact following the avalanche.
According to the ACP, the climbing team consists of 10 members, including 5 Nepalis, 1 Pakistani, 1 Omani, 1 Chinese, 1 American, and another foreign climber whose nationality has not been disclosed.
"All possible efforts are being made to ensure helicopter support and all available rescue resources are mobilized at the earliest, subject to weather and operational conditions," the ACP said.
Broad Peak is the world's 12th highest mountain, located in the Karakoram range.
Nirmal Purja, 43, also known as Nims Dai, is one of the world's most famous climbers. Since becoming a professional mountaineer and tour guide in 2018 after leaving the British Army, Purja has broken numerous climbing records.
He conquered all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in 6 months and 6 days from April to October 2019, setting a world record at that time. In 2021, Purja and 9 other Nepali climbers completed the first winter ascent of K2.
